This Quickie combines a gallery talk at the RISD museum with a textiles how-to. Students will start by looking at textile fragments and garments in the Museum, with the guidance of textiles Senior and museum docent Peyton North, and then follow this with an interactive weaving demo.
This museum duration of this Quickie focuses on the process of "deep-looking," where the viewer goes through different stages of interacting with an object – from objective reading to subjective reading and analysis. Students will be looking at both woven and knit pieces.
After this deep looking exercise, Peyton will teach students basic weaving on a frame loom, inspired by the curated objects examined. The technique learned will be dependent on the object we look at. For example, if the group look at a piece of woven tapestry, then we might cover the basics of tapestry weaving.
